Minecraft – With the help of The Uncensored Library, users from a few countries can gain access to articles that are banned and/or blocked in said countries.
The project was created to get attention on March 12, which is the World Day Against Cyber Censorship. The system is already working in Minecraft. It’s not just a fancy-looking building, as it has content behind it: there’s a virtual, actual library available in Minecraft to make the online press free via Mojang’s game, as users can access articles that have been banned in one way or another. These articles originate from social media or other news publications. The trick is amazing: Minecraft itself is not blocked, as building things within the game doesn’t have any political or religious message, and thus, the heads of the countries have no reason to ban the game.
The library aims to five countries. They are Russia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Egypt. All countries have a separate room in the virtual library with a unique design that is based around specific censorship campaigns. The tombstones are for the killed independent journalists that tried to cover subjects that the leaders of the countries were silent about. In the centre of Saudi Arabia, there’s a cage to signify the torture, as this country has no independent journalism.
The project was created by Reporters Without Borders with the creative design by BlockWorks. If you want to visit the library yourself, make sure you have the 1.14.4 Java version of Minecraft, and type this address in the multiplayer IP: visit.uncensoredlibrary.com. If you want to host a copy of the library yourself, read about it here. Reporters Without Borders are preparing for the worst scenario, it seems. Good idea.
We wonder when the IP address gets blocked, followed by removing the servers that hosted a copy of the said library, as it will happen.
