Two got delayed, and two series of events have pulled the handbrake.
EGX Rezzed, organised by Eurogamer and Reed Exhibitions, would have been held between March 26 and 28 in London, but it was delayed to the summer. „Having monitored the situation around COVID-19 constantly over these last few weeks and following many hours of the conversation internally and with our partners, we have taken the incredibly difficult decision to move EGX: Rezzed to Summer 2020 with date and announcement forthcoming. We did everything that we could to try to run the event as planned, but ultimately, maintaining social distancing is neither feasible at, nor in the spirit of, the interactive and community nature of Rezzed. It is the community that makes Rezzed so special and we must make sure that your safety comes first,” the organisers’ announcement says.
The purchased tickets will be valid for the new, unannounced date, too, but you can ask for a refund as well. The other event by Reedpop (related to EGX Rezzed), MCM Comic-Con Birmingham, has also been pushed from March 21-22 to June 27-28.
Electronic Arts has not delayed just some of its events, but they suspended all of their live events. Their announcement days Apex Legends Global Series (which would have started for the first time, with a 500K USD prize pool), EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series, FIFA Online 4 Live Events, and Madden NFL 20 Championship Series are all suspended indefinitely. „This includes EA-operated events as well as third-party events run under license from EA. Additionally, this includes all competitive gaming content except for broadcasts that can be individually produced remotely. Online events, where participants and staff are remote and separated will continue. This suspension of events and broadcasts will start today, March 13th, and will be in effect until the global coronavirus situation improves. This decision hasn’t come easy, but given the large, global nature of the event, we believe that making this change is in the best interest of protecting the health of the community, including competitors, attendees and staff. As we continue to monitor the situation around the coronavirus and receive guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), we’ll continue to evaluate and provide more updates as it relates to all Apex Legends Global Series events,” the publisher says. Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournament on March 21 and 23 will proceed.
Smash World Tour, Nintendo’s popular Super Smash Bros.’ eSport championship, has also been wiped off the table, as the organisers announced that all platinum and gold events have been cancelled in March and April. The third tier, silver, is the lowest. Any championship can join if there are more than 32 players, and since it’s about collecting points, even bigger players can show up to increase their score.
