Microsoft Can Afford To Not Be A Leader In VR

Schell Games’ CEO, Jesse Schell believes that it’s not necessary for the Redmond-based company to be a market leader or to have a revolutionary approach to virtual reality. (They do have a distant approach to it on consoles: the Xbox Series X has nothing related to VR at the moment.)

„Companies like Microsoft, they don’t have any reason to hurry. They can wait and watch and see what’s working and then they can act on that. If you have a base that likes your platform, you can watch what other people are doing and then you can kind of come in with a system that makes sense. You don’t have to take as many risks when you do it. So I don’t necessarily look at it as short-sighted. It’s just that they have chosen to be followers instead of leaders in this space and when you have a big enough market advantage, you can afford to do that, you can be a follower and still be very successful. That’s, for example, Apple’s strategy. Apple tends not to invent things, they tend to just make better versions of things that someone else created,” Schell told WCCFTech.

Since Schell Games has worked on several VR games, they do have some insight into the market. Still, we have yet to see how VR will spread in the next few years. The PlayStation VR is indeed a market leader (but, in return, it provides worse quality than the more expensive PC rivals), but we don’t see things change significantly. The Xbox Series X avoids VR, while Microsoft supports Mixed Reality devices on Windows.

Oculus Rift’s launch was four years ago, and VR still hasn’t gained a lot of foothold. So Microsoft being patient makes sense. Meanwhile, Sony is likely developing a new PlayStation VR for its PlayStation 5.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
