Sometimes, you have to do a stupid idea to reap the rewards – Adam Boyes’ idea proves it, too!
In 2013, Microsoft announced the Xbox One as a console that will require an Internet connection and that it won’t allow sharing used games. Sony has responded in style with a video.
Adam Boyes, who previously was Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) vice president, told PushSquare in an interview that he was flying out to Los Angeles to attend E3 2013. On the plane, he was watching a video from Giant Bomb, where they weren’t able to wrap their heads around Microsoft’s used game policies. It inspired the former Sony head to create a technically zero-budget video that showcases how easy it is to share your games with others if they are in a physical format.
Sony’s leadership loved the idea, but Jack Tretton, SIE-preceding Sony Computer Entertainment’s America head did not want it to be part of E3, as it did not show a corporate message. That’s why the 21-second video was just uploaded to YouTube. It got popularity, though…
Boyes revealed that he wasn’t planned to be part of the video, but when he contacted Shuhei Yoshida to star in it, Shu convinced him to participate, as it was his idea altogether. „We had some takes where we were like ‘That was easy’ but that’s Target’s tagline, so, in the end, we just went with a thanks. As soon as Jack announced the policies [on game sharing], we both tweeted the exact same time a link to that video. I remember because I had to type on Shu’s phone to make sure it was perfect and I couldn’t copy and paste so I was putting in the YouTube address. We hit send and the meme was born,” Boyes said.
Still, a dumb idea that might have helped Sony win the current generation.
