Here’s Gears Of War 3… Running On A PlayStation 3!? [VIDEO]

Epic Games also responded to this unexpected leak… but this is an existing, real port.

Microsoft got the IP of Gears of War in 2014, but after the first instalment, the franchise was console-exclusive in the previous console generation. (The first game did get a PC version, but the second one didn’t. Back then, even Cliff Bleszinski, also known as CliffyB, was working on the series – he has since moved on to work on Broadway, but he offered Microsoft his help to be a consultant on the series.)

Still, Gears of War 3, which launched in September 2011 on Xbox 360, does have a working PlayStation 3 build. Let’s see the description of the YouTube video: „This build is dated May 19, 2011, and is the only build of this ever located. As far as I know, I’m also the only person with a working build of this particular data as well. I don’t know why it exists, I don’t know why it was made. All I can do is speculate.” The description also mentions that the game is running on a PS3 devkit, which has more RAM than a regular PlayStation 3, meaning this port would likely not run on an ordinary console. This weird port also has Xbox prompts and button layouts. It also tries to read storage as if it was running on an Xbox 360.

The game doesn’t run well. It has bugs, no question about it. It’s also not optimised well: the frame rate is terrible here and there.

The video above shows the first thirty seconds that were edited out of the YouTube video below. It proves that the game is from a PlayStation 3, as we can see the XMB in the first few seconds. But why does Gears of War 3 use an Unreal Tournament III icon…?

Kotaku got an answer by Epic Games. Tim Sweeney and co answered that the PlayStation 3 port was used internally to test Unreal Engine 3, and that explains the UT III icon on the XMB. Epic had no plans to make a port of the game for the rival console.

Still, if you have a spare 8 hours and 21 minutes, you can see it for yourself below.
