Nvidia’s DLSS 2.0 technology enables high-quality 4K images to be displayed with less processing cost.
With the launch of new generation consoles getting closer, the truth is that quite a few important details about the new machines are unknown, especially the PlayStation 5. A new Activities function was recently leaked from the Sony console to start games instantly, which was already visible in a March patent. And now, one more Sony patent has come to light, which appears to be related to PS5 and an AI rescaling system. Something that sounds very similar to the DLSS 2.0 technology that Nvidia uses.
This patent, found by Android Central, was registered for the first time in 2019, although it was not made public until July 23. In it, Sony Interactive Entertainment talks about “an information processing device” that uses multiple reference images on the objects to be displayed, modifies the dimensions of said images, and processes the information to recreate the object on screen. Or, in other words, allowing images to be reconstructed based on references of different resolutions and sizes, which usually implies a lower processing cost.
The important detail of this technology is that it relies on machine learning to recreate these images, in the same way that Nvidia’s new cards operate with its AI-based DLSS 2.0 system to rescale images to 4K. According to the patent, the PlayStation system “employs machine learning using a variety of images to learn, such as teaching data, which will include the plurality of converted images, and generating previously learned data that is used to make a reproduction of the image representing the appearance of the object. ”
Given the dates of this patent, and the techniques it mentions, it seems likely that it was devised with PS5 in mind. Although the registration of a patent does not always imply that the aforementioned technology will be used, so it cannot yet be affirmed that this technique is used in console games. Now that Microsoft has confirmed that we will see more Xbox Series X news in August, it only remains to see if PlayStation does the same and announces an event. Until then, here you have all the announcements of the presentation of PS5.
