Is The Developer Of Yakuza Envies The Success Of Ghost of Tsushima?

Toshihiro Nagoshi, was impressed by Ghost of Tsushima, yet he believes it is a defeat for Japanese game development.

The debate on the alleged lag of Japanese video game development with respect to the American or European industries has been commonplace in recent years, with controversial episodes such as the statements of the designer Phil Fish is a good example of how sensitive this theme turned out; However, Japanese developers like Toshihiro Nagoshi, director of the Yakuza saga , seem to recognize the gap and that, as part of a recent talk, Nagoshi admitted that he was amazed by the PlayStation 4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima , but also confessed to seeing it as a testimony to the backwardness of the Japanese game making industry.

„Of course we are losing!”

“Honestly, they defeated us,” Nagoshi said with a smile, during a SEGA live. “Yes, of course we are losing. Honestly, I think [Ghost of Tsushima] is a game that should have been made in Japan,” he added and acknowledged his amazement at the level of detail in the game, as well as the design philosophy that It leads behind and breaks with Japanese marketing paradigms.

“The protagonist [Jin] is not particularly good-looking, don’t you think? In your typical [Japanese] company, if you show concept art with a character like him, I don’t think they approve of it,” he said, adding that Japanese executives would have preferred a younger guy. Nagoshi denied the notion that people from the West do not understand Japanese culture and expressed amazement at the veneration that many of them have for Japan. He continued, “There are several things [in the game] that I take my hat off, like betting on putting a game in that period and that it could go on. I have an honest impression that a good job was done.”

Back on a panel about the 2012 documentary Indie Game The Movie, FEZ creator and independent developer Phil Fish generated controversy by saying that many of the Japanese games sucked, statements that Keiji Inafune, the father of Mega Man, called severe, but necessary.

Ghost of Tsushima is the work of the American studio Sucker Punch Productions, based in Washington state. The title has been a commercial success, even in Japan.
