The original DOOM trilogy (not 2016’s DOOM reboot and its sequel, DOOM Eternal!) had a protagonist with no official name, so everyone was guessing about it until now.
October 10 1994. On this day, DOOM II was released, and yesterday, we celebrated its 26th anniversary, which is why John Romero, one of the creators behind DOOM, answered a few questions on Twitter. We’re sure many questions were about what the name of the protagonist is – and Romero promptly revealed that Doomguy’s name is… Doom Guy.
As PCGamer funnily points out, Guy is a common Germanic surname in France and England, but Doom as a first name is… quite uncommon. Then again, Quake III Arena, which featured his character, called him as Doom so already twenty years ago, it seemed to be just how Romero said on Twitter. Don’t forget that Doomguy (or Doom Guy, we need to get used to it!) is no longer the protagonist of the series, as his mantle was taken over by Doom Slayer, who is just as brutal as his predecessor was. The reboot is about to expand.
It’s coming in just a few days: „The first of a two-part story expansion for DOOM Eternal, “The Ancient Gods, Part One” casts players once again as the DOOM Slayer to confront an ancient evil [Khan Maykr, Icon of Sin] awoken from an imbalance in the heavens. Ripping and tearing through never-before-seen locations in the DOOM universe, players will face off against fierce new demons and discover a new chapter in the DOOM Slayer’s story.
“The Ancient Gods, Part One” will be available at no additional cost for players who own the DOOM Eternal Year One Pass or the Digital Deluxe edition of DOOM Eternal. For players who don’t own the Year One Pass, The Ancient Gods, Part One will be available to purchase separately and will include free access to BATTLEMODE. Players do not need to own DOOM Eternal to purchase and play The Ancient Gods, Part One. The Year One Pass is still available for $29.99 and includes access to both DLC 1 and 2. “The Ancient Gods, Part One” will also be available as a standalone purchase for $19.99,” the publisher wrote in August.
So DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part One is coming on October 20 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. We wonder when it will show up on (Xbox) Game Pass…
