According to a new survey, the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series duo are on the same level of interest.
Colin Sebastian, the senior research analyst of Baird Equity Research, said in a note to investors that the survey they conducted with nearly a thousand US costumers brought up the result of more than a third of them not planning to acquire a next-gen console this year. There are some surprises in the results.
41% of the respondents said that they are not planning to buy a next-gen console in 2020. 18% of them want to buy a PlayStation 5 (and there is no differentiation here – this includes both the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition!), 13% of them are interested in an Xbox Series X, 12% would go for a Nintendo Switch, 10% of them would pick an older/current-gen console (such as the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One), and 5% would acquire an Xbox Series S. 18 = 13 + 5, so the Sony and the Microsoft base have the same percentage, which, according to Sebastian, is a positive result for Microsoft.
However, we have seen both with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series that the pre-orders were not that smooth and that there might be scarcity at the end of the year. Sebastian pointed it out that there might be a lack of supply of the new consoles, making many players go for current-gen titles (or cross-gen games’ current-gen versions). However, there is a smaller interest in current-gen titles than last year.
And as the sky is blue, the most anticipated game of the year is unsurprisingly Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (24% of the respondents plan to pick it up). It’s followed by FIFA 21 (18%), Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla (16%), Cyberpunk 2077 (15%), and Star Wars Squadrons (14%). There aren’t many surprises here.
As there’s likely a global recession after the coronavirus pandemic, seeing so many people be patient is not surprising. 500 dollars is not a small amount after all.
