The Microsoft-Zeinmax deal might have launched a chain reaction within the gaming industry.
VGC was the first to report about Codemasters (who bought Slightly Mad Studios this summer…) having received a potential offer of being bought by Take-Two, meaning Strauss Zelnick would get a hold of the F1 and DIRT licenses with the acquisition for about 740 million GBP, or approximately 974.5 million dollars. However, Take-Two’s shareholders have to accept the offer.
„Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. today confirmed an announcement made by the Board of Codemasters that the Company has proposed to acquire the entire issued share capital of UK-based game publisher and developer, Codemasters […]
Take-Two believes that the combination of Take-Two and Codemasters would bring together two world-class interactive entertainment portfolios, with a highly complementary fit between Take-Two’s 2K publishing label and Codemasters in the racing genre. Also, Take-Two believes that it can bring benefits to Codemasters’ performance by leveraging Take-Two’s global distribution network and 2K’s core operating expertise in publishing, including live operations, analytics, product development, and brand and performance marketing […] Take-Two is required, by not later than noon ET on December 4, 2020, either to announce a firm intention to make an offer for Codemasters,” quoting the relevant parts of Take-Two’s statement. The price doesn’t seem too bad, especially if we consider that Codemasters is filling a niche with racing games (only Kylotonn, Milestone, and Microsoft compete here – Evolution Studios has formerly folded into Codemasters…).
After all this, we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony makes an offer to buy SEGA Sammy, who is now getting rid of its arcade business – the company has announced significant losses, and with this move, PlayStation could keep up with Xbox (who might get a few exclusive titles via Bethesda…). And Codemasters is a significant name since the 90s. Their first slogan was „Absolutely brilliant!”
