More than twenty-five million concurrent users on Gabe Newell’s service – we haven’t seen anything like that before.
On January 2, the users achieved a milestone – more than 25 million users were logged into Steam at the same time. According to SteamDB, 25415080 users were concurrently logged in, so it almost reached 25.5 million users. This record will likely be broken over time.
However, this number does not automatically mean that more people were logged in and playing, too – in March, its new record became 8.1 million users, but the recent figure for that was only 7.4 million. As expected, Valve’s free-to-play titles were taking the most players in (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – more than a million player, DotA 2 – almost 700 thousand; aside from that, for example, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds had over 400 thousand players. More than ten million players will likely be playing games via Steam simultaneously, with the logged-in user record potentially creeping above 30 million.
And here, we can see the top-rated games on Steam by the users. With the help of Steam 250, we can easily overview what the players appreciated the most. Here’s the top ten list: Hades, Factorio, Phasmophobia, Helltaker, Half-Life: Alyx, The Henry Stickmin Collection, Risk of Rain 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Persona 4 Golden, Satisfactory. Henry Stickmin Collection is a remastered package of Flash-era games, which is fitting, as Flash Player has been put to rest, as we discussed recently – that’s why being that high in the list makes sense.
Half-Life: Alyx’s inclusion is also reasonable – Valve returned to Half-Life, albeit in VR only, and while it wasn’t able to break through into mainstream results, it did push virtual reality a step closer to it. Gabe Newell’s digital store continues to do well, but this year, Tim Sweeney’s Epic Games Store and its exclusivity deals might be causing some competition.
