Akira Yamaoka has made us all excited, and this time, it wasn’t because of some of the music he created – instead, it’s because of a comment he made.
Yamaoka was interviewed by Al-Hub, and here, he said that his next project will be something that the fans have been waiting for. It will be announced around the summer. He was asked when this project will be revealed, and he replied with the following: „When, I wonder… I think I might be able to talk about it around the summer or so… (Summer this year?) That’s right… But I’m quite sure it will be the one you’ve been waiting for, Mutlaq [the interviewer].”
We recently heard Yamaoka’s work in Bloober Team’s newest game, The Medium. However, he was only a co-composer in this game, as the team’s internal composer, Arkadiusz Reikowski also had a fair share of composition. Still, we have heard Yamaoka’s work in several games, as he has been active for about three decades now. Here are a few examples: Contra: Hard Corps (or Probotector in Europe; 1994, SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis); International Superstar Soccer Pro ’98 (1997/1998, PlayStation – this was the predecessor of Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series); the Silent Hill series (between 1999 and 2009 között, mainly on PlayStation platforms); Shadows of the Damned (2011, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360); Sine Mora (2012); Killer is Dead (2013, several platforms, he was the musical director); Let It Die (2016, PlayStation 4, musical director). He’s been at several publishers and developers, but indeed we mostly know him for his work in Silent Hill.
This „fans have been waiting for” comment makes us suspect that Akira Yamaoka has teamed up with Konami (and Sony?) to work on Silent Hill, which has been rumoured to get a PlayStation 5-exclusive soft reboot. The series is nowadays relegated to guest appearances (there were two recently, we discussed both of them).
If it happens in the summer, it might be during E3, IF it will be held. The interview meanwhile has been taken down, hm…
