Although Bethesda Softworks (which is now officially owned by Microsoft) continues to develop some multiplayer titles, the company under Zenimax will focus on platforms where the Xbox Game Pass is available.
„I listen to the podcasts and all the questions, so I’m gonna try to be as clear as I can because that’s what I—I just think it’s fair. So obviously I can’t sit here and say every Bethesda game is exclusive, because we know that’s not true. There are contractual obligations that we’re going to see through as we always do in every one of these instances.
We have games that exist on other platforms, and we’re going to go support those games on the platforms they’re on. There are communities of players. We love those communities and we’ll continue to invest in them. And even in the future, there might be things that have either contractual things or a legacy on different platforms that we’ll go do. But if you’re an Xbox customer, the thing I want you to know is this is about delivering great exclusive games for you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists, and that’s our goal. That’s why we’re doing this. That’s the root of this partnership that we’re building, and the creative capability we will be able to bring to market for our Xbox customers is going to be the best it’s ever been for Xbox after we’re done here,” Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, said at the Bethesda Joins Xbox – Roundtable broadcast.
Spencer also essentially confirmed that the idTech engine by id Software will be used by other studios within Xbox Game Studios as well: „When you think about id Software’s capability and them collaborating and talking with The Coalition and 343 Industries, and just the first-person/third-person shooter space that we have, the studios that are there, I think it’s just kind of an amazing capability.
The other thing that we haven’t talked about is the future of idTech and what could that mean inside of Xbox. You know, we’ve got a ton of studios doing a bunch of different work. I love the way Marty Stratton talked about how they’ve collaborated with our Bethesda studios on idTech and I just think about that to the next level. Like, what can we do inside of our organization with idTech, which is one of the world’s best game engines out there, and just make it a tool that so many developers can use to realize their vision,” he added. Since idTech is now their first-party technology, they don’t have to pay Epic Games to use Unreal Engine (which is what The Coalition has used so far).
And finally, Microsoft announced that no less than twenty Bethesda titles join Game Pass. They are the following: Dishonored Definitive Edition (console – Xbox One/Xbox Series, PC, cloud), Dishonored 2 (console, PC, cloud), DOOM (1993-as; console, PC, cloud), DOOM II (console, PC, cloud), DOOM 3 (console, PC, cloud), DOOM 64 (console, PC, cloud), DOOM Eternal (console, PC, cloud), The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (console, PC), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (console, PC), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (console, PC, cloud), The Elder Scrolls Online (console, cloud), The Evil Within (console, PC, cloud), Fallout 4 (console, PC, cloud), Fallout 76 (console, PC, cloud), Fallout: New Vegas (console), Prey (2017, console, PC, cloud), RAGE 2 (console, PC, cloud), Wolfenstein: The New Order (console, PC, cloud), Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (console, PC, cloud), Wolfenstein: Youngblood (console, PC, cloud).
The games will be available from March 12.
