Marvel’s Avengers: Don’t Expect Spider-Man Just Yet!

It’s getting pathetic: we got an announcement before the launch of the game that there will be a PlayStation-exclusive character, who… is still not here!

So last year, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal announced that Spider-Man is going to be a PlayStation-exclusive (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4) character. This didn’t get a good round of applause, but then, the PlayStation 4 cover of Marvel’s Avengers happily advertised the exclusivity. Sure, if he launched say, one or two months after the game’s launch, it wouldn’t be a problem. But Spidey is still not present in the live service game!

No wonder IGN contacted Crystal Dynamics to explain what the current situation is. Here’s what Scot Amos, the head of the studio said: „I can tell you that, formally, officially, people are working on him right now, so it is still on our roadmap for the future.” He also clarified that Spider-Man will not arrive before Black Panther, who will be part of the War for Wakanda expansion. That’s going to launch in the summer. So by the earliest, he’s coming in the summer months.

Amos added that the roadmap includes content that Crystal Dynamics can commit to releasing shortly. This somewhat contrasts what the studio said in August: „When Spider-Man comes to our stable of heroes, we’ll be marking his debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers. The event is comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results. And like the rest of our heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall-crawler a reality.”

Marvel’s Avengers launched on September 4. So it might take a whole year for Spidey to join the crew. That exclusivity sticker on the PS4 cover art could cause a class-action lawsuit for Square Enix, as it’s – currently – false advertising…
