Netflix wants to slowly get a foothold in the gaming industry, too, but it looks like they are already firing all cylinders behind the scenes.
Netflix isn’t joking: they hired Mike Verdu (ex-Electronic Arts, Zynga, Oculus) to head the company’s newly-formed gaming division. Rumours claim that the subscribers might see games from Netflix as early as 2022, and here, we have to mention that the partner in crime here could be none other than Sony!
„Netflix’s gaming feature has a current working name of „Shark,” and is represented by this image in their iOS app: a shark fin. Could an image of [the] PlayStation 5 [DualSense] controllers and Sony’s Ghost of Tsushima (its Director’s Cut coming on August 20 [on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4] indicate a partnership with Sony?”, Steve Moser, a data miner, wrote on Twitter, including the four images below. You can see the shark logo on the third, the Ghost of Tsushima image on the second, and the DualSense controllers on the fourth, respectively.
Microsoft has a popular subscription service that allows subscribers to download a lot of games and play them locally. Xbox Game Pass’ Ultimate tier also provides access to games via the cloud. Sony only has PlayStation Now, which is another streaming service for the most part. If Sony and Netflix do end up partnering, then the Redmond-based company might be getting a big rival shortly. And it should be useful for us, the customers: competition tends to bring out the best from everyone.
Keep in mind that none of it is official at the moment. Right now, we don’t even know how Netflix even plans to enter gaming. Will they provide games to be downloaded? Or will those be streamed from the cloud? These technologies are significantly different from each other.
