Jim Ryan’s comment, which is at least much more interesting than the “players only remember the best games” statement we recently covered…
Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was interviewed by TMPost, and here, he said that new IP (intellectual properties) are the lifeblood of not only Sony Interactive Entertainment but also the entertainment industry in general. It is difficult to create new IP, but Ryan says that PlayStation has been lucky.
He quoted two successful examples, namely Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn (whose sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, might not launch this year on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4) and Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima (whose Director Cut, complete with the new Iki Island, will launch on August 20 on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4). Ryan added that Days Gone „performed well,” even though we heard rumours of him turning down a sequel to it. He also said that Astro Bot Rescue Mission on the PlayStation VR produced „good results.”
„I am very happy that we can do this [create new IP] in the past few years, but it requires great courage and the courage to bear financial risks. It also requires trust in the studio. If your studio is doing well, then your confidence in the studio will grow over time, and you will be more willing to take risks and find the right time Our relationship with the studio is in a period that I call a healthy circle. We need products, are willing to invest, and are willing to take risks. At the other end of this circle is the reputation of PlayStation Studios in the industry,” Ryan said.
Sony recently announced a few third-party collaborations for new IPs, which includes Jade Raymond’s (ex-Ubisoft, ex-Electronic Arts Motive) Haven Studios and former Call of Duty devs’ Deviation Games.
