This comment is worth considering, and given that it was made by one of the most influential people in the games industry, Jim Ryan, it’s probably not an offhand thought.
We have been looking through the interview that Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment gave to a Chinese publication, but since it’s such a „meaty” article, it might be a good idea to look into it even on the least favourite day of Garfield (Monday). And this time, not due to a comment that made us laugh (as there were examples of that as well…).
„We have tried to bring some existing IP to the mobile platform. I think this is a way to bring game products to different groups of game players, including young players. As for competitors, I think PlayStation itself has a huge player base. We have more than 100 million players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which is a huge number.
What we need to pay attention to is the game time of players. When talking about competitors, we are competing with others for people’s time. Any form of entertainment that requires users to spend time is competition, not just other game products. Everyone has limited entertainment time. Playing PlayStation is an option, and going to a theatre is also an option. Therefore, what we need to do is to ensure that the entertainment we provide is interesting and attractive, as I said before,” Ryan said.
His comments echo what Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has previously said several times. Spencer has claimed that in the traditional sense, Microsoft no longer considers Sony as competition (and not due to the two companies working together on cloud/streaming technology…).
