It’s long been known that STALKER 2 will run on the Unreal Engine instead of the custom engines previously developed by GSC Game World, but we didn’t know which version of UE was being used. Until now!
Most people assumed that a modified version of Unreal Engine 4 would be the basis of the game, as development on the current version of STALKER 2 started somewhere around 2018, but it seems an update happened somewhere!
Earlier today, Epic published an article hinting at future Unreal Engine projects, and STALKER’s Twitter account confirmed in response that they are using Unreal Engine 5:
Hey @UnrealEngine,
Feel free to mention we're running on UE5 ? https://t.co/GLXdLM5YoV— S.T.A.L.K.E.R. OFFICIAL (@stalker_thegame) August 11, 2021
The Unreal Engine account responded, saying they thought it was a secret, to which the STALKER account responded with a UE5 developer screenshot… and a five.
Hey, sure thing! We thought it was a secret, though…

Yes, if STALKER 2 sticks to its early 2022 release date, it looks like it could be the first major, original, commercially available Unreal Engine 5 game to get into the hands of gamers. Exciting stuff!
STALKER 2 will arrive on 28 April 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
