Overwatch to Change McCree’s Name Due to References to Sex Abuse Scandals

McCree, the beloved character from Blizzard’s shooter, Overwatch was named after one of the developers involved in the scandal.

The Activision Blizzard scandals have not stopped growing, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for the company to get out of the situation in which it is favourably. After the accusations that started the scandals about the toxic and hostile culture towards women, new data and concerns have accumulated, leaving the company in an increasingly worse place.

Just yesterday, we learned that the State of California accused Activision Blizzard of having destroyed evidence and of interfering in the investigation that is being carried out on the situation of the employees in the company and the abuses that have occurred. But the problems did not come only from justice.

Since the community of Overwatch players had focused on one of its most well-known characters, the cowboy Jesse McCree was named after one of the Blizzard developers implicated in the abuses and who recently left the studio. From his community, it was proposed that the character’s name be changed, which was supported by many of the casters of the league itself.

The Overwatch League also lost significant sponsors such as Coca-Cola and State Farm, adding further pressure to the already difficult situation. Finally, Blizzard has shared a statement in which it has confirmed that they have decided to change the name of McCree. They have also explained that the changes will take a while and share updates as they make them.

Blizzard, they have announced that they had planned to start a narrative arc in September supported with a new story and content for the game in which McCree had a critical weight so that they will have to delay the new arc until the end of the year to fit the new vision of the game.
