MOVIE NEWS – Jason Statham continues his lucrative collaboration with Miramax on the upcoming thriller The Bee Keeper, a spec script by Kurt Wimmer that is good enough that the studio paid seven figures to secure it.
Statham only recently completed the untitled Guy Ritchie Project Miramax and starred in Wrath of Man, another Ritchie film, which has just surpassed $104 million at the box office, and with Statham being one of the most bankable men in the industry thanks to his involvement in the Fast and Furious franchise, as well as such heavy hitters as the mega, The Expendables and The Transporter.
The Bee Keeper is described as a “fast-paced thriller deeply rooted in the mythology of beekeeping”. There’s a phrase that no one ever thought would make its way into the world, but there it is. Although there is now a search for a director, Jason Statham will produce with Miramax writer Wimmer and Bill Block.
Block said of the project: “The Bee Keeper explores universal themes with an unconventional story that will have fans sitting on the edge of their seats. We are thrilled to bring another iconic and compelling film to audiences around the world.”
While Statham’s track record speaks for itself, having been involved in over $7.8 billion in box office receipts, Wimmer has also had his fair share of success as a screenwriter, having written the upcoming Children of the Corn remake, Salt, Point Break, The Recruit and the 1999 version of The Thomas Crown Affair. While the brief synopsis certainly sounds strange, there is undoubtedly a lot going on for the project from a talent standpoint.
The actual plot of The Bee Keeper is unknown at the moment, but it’s safe to say that we’ll see the usual high-octane action that has been the staple of Statham’s films for over two decades, and there’s no fear that he’ll spend the duration of the film extracting honey from the hives. That said, there are more than likely many of his fans who would pay to sit and watch him do just that for two hours.
The project is one of many films Miramax has lined up for the next two years, including the genre-swapping remake. It’s All That stars TikTok’s Addison Rae, Chloe Moretz with Mother Android, the much-anticipated Halloween Kills, which sees Jamie Lee Curtis go head-to-head with Michael Myers again, The Georgetown Project with Russell Crowe, and Uncle Frank. This Paul Bettany film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and was subsequently bought by Amazon. In addition to these, there is also the six-part series Spy Town with Dominic Cooper and Perfection with Allison Williams and Logan Browning, acquired by Netflix.
The Bee Keeper is currently expected to begin filming around September 2022, putting it in cinemas in late 2023 at the earliest.
