One of Sony‘s ex-leaders claims that the company will constantly shift the PC port of its games compared to the PlayStation originals, meaning the computer users will always have to wait to play the PlayStation Studios (or Sony Interactive Entertainment…) titles.
Since Layden left Sony in the autumn of 2019, the company’s approach towards the PC hasn’t improved that much. He talked about it in a video interview, and for a good reason: since “the blues” are slowly starting to consider the PC as a viable monetization platform, there was a question about PlayStation games heading towards PC (Steam, Epic Games Store).
“The idea of going to PC – and I don’t think you’ll ever see PlayStation do a day and date with PC, but you know, never say never – but the strategy as we were developing it when I was there was that we need to go out to where these new customers are, these new fans could be. We need to go where they are because they’ve decided not to come to my house, so I’ve got to go to their house now,” Layden said. Meanwhile, Microsoft has the polar opposite approach: they simultaneously launch their Xbox-exclusive titles. For instance, Halo Infinite will be available on Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC from the same day.
Although it is a pleasant sight to see Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, or the recently announced Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection aimed at PC users as well, in all cases, there were years between the games’ respective original PlayStation and the PC launch. But this is Sony’s idea: until they see no money from the PlayStation original releases, they won’t port them to PC.
But versus Microsoft, it might not be the best idea.
