MOVIE NEWS – Alec Baldwin shot and killed cameraman Halyna Hutchins with a prop gun in an accident on the set of his new film.
The recent filming accident brought to everyone’s attention the case of Brandon Lee, whose life was taken by a modified gun loaded with live ammunition, which has already raised serious questions about what can and cannot be brought onto a film set and the need for tighter controls. Unfortunately, a very recent case proved the need for tightening up, as a horrific accident on the set of Alec Baldwin’s upcoming western Rust cost the life of cameraman Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, who caused the accident through no fault of his own, reacted to the tragedy on Twitter in a show of strength. You can read his shocked words below.
“There are no words for the shock and grief I feel over the accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, a mother and a colleague sincerely admired by many of us. I am fully cooperating with the police in their investigation into how this tragedy could have happened and I have contacted [Hutchins’] husband, offering him and his family my full support. My heart goes out to her husband, their son and everyone who knew and loved Halyna,” Alec Baldwin wrote.
The tragedy happened on October 21, when Baldwin fired a prop gun as required by the scene during filming, but it was probably loaded with the wrong ammunition or the totally wrong prop was prepared for the actor. The police cordoned off the shooting scene and Halyna Hutchins was taken to hospital by helicopter, but her life could not be saved. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the accident and was also taken to hospital, but there is no word on his condition (UPDATE: Deadline reports that Souza has been released from hospital). Police have since interviewed Alec Baldwin, but no arrest or charges have been made, but as the actor has stated, an investigation is ongoing. It is unlikely that Baldwin will be found guilty, but rather that the person responsible may be the one who failed to prepare the props properly. However, without full knowledge of the circumstances, it is not worth making any statements on the case at this stage.
Rust is the personal project of Joel Souza and Alec Baldwin, who co-wrote the story and produced the western film. The story follows the 13-year-old grandson of a wanted outlaw named Harland Rust (Baldwin), Lucas (Brady Noon), who is accused of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. Rust is not going to let this go and decides to bail the boy out of jail. He succeeds, but he is pursued by Marshal Wood Halm (Jensen Ackles) and Fenton “Preacher” Lang, the feared bounty hunter (Travis Fimmel).
