MOVIE NEWS – John Cho’s cruciate ligament was torn during filming, causing the series to be on hold for a year (!), but even more shocking is the solution Netflix came up with!
When John Cho was originally cast as Spike Spiegel in Netflix’s 2019 adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, the reaction was pretty positive. After all, the actor is considered by many to be a reliable and engaging actor. However, six months later, John Cho suffered an injury on set that halted filming while he was given time to heal.
Now that Bebop is finally available to watch on Netflix, John Cho has recently been given the opportunity to speak more candidly about what happened. Appearing on James Corden’s Late Late Show, the actor revealed that he tore his ACL while filming a scene one night. Although he’s still not sure what caused it, he talked about the astonishing solutions the show’s creators came up with to solve the problem during his recovery. One such suggestion was to CG his face onto another actor, as in The Irishman.
Of course, this was not done because it would have cost a lot of money. Likewise, the significantly cheaper option was to use only a stool and take John Cho only from below. In the end, this was also rejected because, according to John Cho, “they thought it was dangerous”. So he was given a year off to recover, while Cho found himself thinking only of the smoking, noodle-loving, stilt-legged cowboy.
“I don’t think I’ve ever thought about any role more,” said John Cho, who talked about thinking about Spike and the show “every day” during the year of physical therapy. She finished the first season with a brand new knee and is happy things are going well. “So far, so good,” he joked while still knocking it off. “I’m supposed to be 100 per cent, but don’t test me.”
Cho is known for his role as Sulu in the Star Trek reboot, among other things, and can’t seem to stay away from sci-fi between Bebop and Star Trek. When Reggie Watts asked him if he’d ever considered shooting a movie in space, like the one Tom Cruise is eventually planning, Cho answered “yes” with the apparent seriousness of a kid who’d just been asked if he’d like a new toy. “If you learn to play the piano,” he jokingly told Corden, “then I can really go into space.” Maybe that could be the plan if Bebop gets a second season.
Cowboy Bebop is now available on Netflix.
