Returnal: A DLC Announcement At The Game Awards?

Housemarque, now part of Sony Interactive Entertainment (or, more accurately, PlayStation Studios…), could be hinting that Returnal, which Sony has also hailed as a success, could be in for a content update, possibly in early 2022.

The rogue-like, bullet hell, a third-person action game is currently only available for PlayStation 5 (and knowing Sony, it might show up on PC two years later). Housemarque has now started to advertise something suspicious on Twitter, using a bit of incorrect grammar. Although the attached picture is accompanied by the hashtag #Returnal (which the Finnish team uses to confirm where the image comes from), the term “Atropos..?”, inaccurately, has just two dots instead of three, making it grammatically incorrect.

The image has one problem: we don’t know what Housemarque was referring to, as we can’t identify the context; the biome seems new. The image quality feels like it was taken with a camera, so someone must have taken out their mobile phone and clicked the snap button on the device held in front of the television. It looks like something stony in the picture, maybe a horned helmet, perhaps a head. It could be one of the statues, although we can only speculate at the moment.

And the comment “Atropos..?” might suggest that the picture was not taken on Atropos, the site of the Returnal, but that Selene could be going somewhere else. Hence, we could be looking at a new location, which could hint at a new DLC. If we are not mistaken, the announcement could be made during this year’s The Game Awards, held on December 9, in a few weeks.

It will be the last big video game event of the year, as it will be Christmas Eve two weeks after; people will be stomping on each other in the shops for the last loaves of bread. Geoff Keighley, the organiser of The Game Awards, has promised a big show that could change the face of the games industry, with so many announcements. Of course, it is natural to doubt this because we have no insight into the content behind his PR talk.
