Ed Boon can’t wait to announce NetherRealm’s latest game, but they’ve still got a lot of work to do before the launch.
What’s all the silence about at NetherRealm…? Monolith left the 2021 Game Awards with the announcement of Wonder Woman and a new trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, while Gotham Knights was announced a few weeks ago, and Hogwarts Legacy is still scheduled for release in 2022. That makes four in-house WBIE teams with confirmed projects, but what about NetherRealm Studios – what are they working on?
On Saturday, Ed Boon was asked about this on Twitter and replied that they need more time to offer something official to fans.
“Really appreciate the enthusiasm for our next game and wish we were ready to announce. But we aren’t yet.”
– replied the director of Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat 11. “Many more variables involved than we are allowed to disclose”.
After the release of MK 11, a video game featuring DC Comics superheroes and villains seems to be the next project for the veteran NetherRealm Studios team, while these mysterious variables Boon is referring to could possibly push for a collaboration with an outside company. Unfortunately, all of this remains speculation, and we’ll have to wait and see to find out the truth.
On the other hand, doubts have been raised over the summer about the ownership of NetherRealm Studios, which Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has questioned, was quick to refute.
Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 continues to sell well and will land on Xbox Game Pass shortly.
