The Case Of Bully 2: More Details Revealed About Its Development And Cancellation

Members of Rockstar New England, who preferred to remain anonymous, spoke about Bully 2

Much has already been said about Bully 2, the sequel to Rockstar Games’ infamous title that never saw the light of day. Now, thanks to a report from GameInformer, we know new details about the sad story behind the project, including information about what it might have been like if it had been released to the public.

Rockstar New England wanted to be the golden child of the company, but it was challenging when Rockstar North was the one producing all the golden eggs at the time,” mentions an anonymous developer. “Living in the shadow of someone with as big a shadow as Rockstar North, and trying to steal that spot, is a very difficult and almost impossible thing to do”.

The report indicates that Rockstar New England was extremely excited to develop Bully 2, but the project had to be put on hold in favour of titles that had bigger problems during development, such as Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar acquired the studio Mad Doc Software in 2008, which it renamed Rockstar New England. As a tradition, each studio’s investment needed to prove that its purchase had ‘paid off’ by working on a ‘big release’ for the company. In New England’s case, that title was Bully 2.

The title was playable, as we’d heard previously, and “had approximately 6-8 hours of finished content,” said Marc Anthony Rodriguez, former Rockstar NYC analyst. There were missions with Go-Karts and even a Simpsons reference inside Kamp Krusty. Bully 2 had nods to The Goonies, Porky, various NPCs walking around and doing tasks, among other things, but obviously, none of that came out of development.

Rockstar Games hasn’t shared anything about Bully 2, but thanks to reports like this one, we know the project existed and was even on the right track. Other titles were considered more important and took up the company’s efforts and the expertise of the team behind the game.
