Spencer couldn’t help but notice that Sony has signed a buyout deal with one of the shooter genre’s most iconic video game studios.
Phil Spencer could claim the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft as a personal success. But just two weeks later, PlayStation has already made its (first) move in response, buying one of the most experienced and iconic studios in the industry, particularly in the shooter genre. Bungie became part of Sony, or PlayStation Studios, for $3.6 billion, and the reaction was swift.
Hermen Hulst is grateful for Phil Spencer’s congratulations
Given the studio’s close relationship with Xbox, Phil Spencer was expected to be quick to speak out, with his usual courtesy and praise for the legendary studio, the father of franchises such as Halo and Destiny. The Xbox boss also congratulated PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, who has added a key member to the prolific staff.
Hulst was grateful for the congratulations, noting that “these are exciting times as gamers.” Incredible as it may seem after the stunning start to 2022, it’s rumoured that neither company is putting aside their chequebook just yet. Microsoft has insisted that Xbox will continue to add studios to its ranks, while Jim Ryan himself has previously explained that we can expect further acquisitions from PlayStation soon.
