The testing phase of Amazon’s streaming service has been completed, and now, everyone in the US can try out how the game streaming service from the company that also owns Twitch, among others, performs.
After Google Stadia, another major tech company has entered the streaming market in earnest (there’s Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Now, GeForce Now from Nvidia, and reportedly Electronic Arts is up to something…), and it’s now available in the US on PC, Mac, Fire TV, Fire tablet, iOS phones and tablets, Android phones and Chromebooks with no limits in the US.
“Our vision for Prime Gaming has always been to improve the playing experience through free in-game content for the games people love as well as a growing library of free games, and we are thrilled to launch the Prime Gaming Channel on Amazon Luna for Amazon Prime members. We’ve consistently heard Prime members are excited to try out cloud gaming on Luna, and now they can instantly, anywhere, with a unique offer of a rotating library of free games from Prime Gaming,” Larry Plotnick, general manager of Amazon Prime Gaming, said in the press release.
Amazon Prime members will thus have access to a dedicated channel with a continuously rotating game library. In March, members will be able to access Devil May Cry 5; Observer: System Redux; PHOGS!; Flashback; and Immortals Fenyx Rising will also be added from March 8 to 14. There are also retro games (such as Street Fighter II) and family games (the Jackbox series). The next big update will also affect the Twitch platform: on PC, Mac and Fire TV, there’s a new stream button to stream gameplay to Twitch with a camera on your screen, simplifying the process. On Fire TV devices, you can connect your phone with a QR code to act as a camera and microphone.
You can also try Amazon Luna on Fire TV with an Android or iPhone phone with the device acting as a controller. Just download the Luna Controller app, available for free in the iOS and Android app stores. The on-screen controller can also be used as an alternative solution in several genres (e.g. side-scrolling platformers, turn-based RPGs, quizzes).
As of April 1, the new Amazon Luna+ subscription will cost $10 per month, and the Family Channel will cost $6. Early access customers, or those who subscribe before March 31, will be able to get the old rates ($6/3) if their subscription is in good standing. The Retro Channel and Jackbox Games Channel are $5 per month each, and the Ubisoft+ Channel is $18 per month.
It is unknown when the service will be available outside the US.
