Can We Expect to See Benedict Cumberbatch in More Doctor Strange Movies? The Star Spoke About It

MOVIE NEWS – Ahead of the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed his plans for the role.

After playing Doctor Strange in the MCU since 2016, there’s every chance Benedict Cumberbatch might be getting tired of just flying around and playing with imaginary portals on the green screen. However, the Sherlock star has made it clear that he has no plans to hang up the mystical cape anytime in the foreseeable future and wants to have plenty more adventures as a Marvel wizard.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in cinemas this week, and after a six-year wait for his second solo film, it looks like the wait was certainly worth it. With an open multiverse, a plethora of cameos and character variations, and a mind-bending storyline, this will be one of the biggest films of Phase 4 of the MCU. It could be the Doctor’s first billion-dollar outing, but probably not his last.

Benedict Cumberbatch is currently blasting worldwide on the promotional tour for the new Marvel movie. While the actor is well used to not revealing Marvel secrets, he was keen to talk about his hopes for the future of Doctor Strange and how he doesn’t want to give up on the character. As shared by @DoctorStrangeUpdates on Twitter, Cumberbatch spoke to Total Film:

“I’m not tired of it all yet. I really enjoy playing this character, and I’ve still got a lot left to give as him, and a lot more adventures I want to have with him.”

In the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange was initially scheduled to premiere in May 2021. Still, due to the ongoing Covid outbreak, the film was first delayed to November 2021, then to March 2022, finally settling on a May 6 premiere. While audiences have lost interest in waiting for some of the delayed films to arrive, with many having waited so long that they thought they might as well wait a little longer for those films to arrive on streaming platforms, there has been no such drop in hype for the Doctor Strange sequel.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, the anticipation and excitement for another foray into the Doctor Strange multiverse is at an all-time high. At the end of last week, the film had already grossed over $40 million in advance ticket sales, and predictions of an opening weekend of around $150 million seem very cautious. Spider-Man: There’s No Turning Back managed to massively outperform the expected numbers in its opening weekend and throughout its entire run, and Marvel Studios and Disney are certainly hoping that Doctor Strange can do the same, thanks to a comprehensive list of confirmed and rumoured cameo appearances.

Whatever the multiverse has in store for Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, it seems pretty sure that this won’t be the last solo film we see the wizard in. Still, with a journey of self-discovery ahead of him, Strange is likely to be very different by the film’s end.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in cinemas on May 6th, and we’ll be reviewing it on Tuesday, May 3rd.
