MOVIE NEWS – Starring Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga, the reboot series of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film True Lies is moving forward.
The TV series based on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s True Lies is moving forward at CBS, as the network has ordered the series based on the pilot that was greenlit early last year. After a long delay, the pilot was originally slated to be among the possible new shows last year, but was pushed back to this year. The series will reboot the story and rework the original plot, starring Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga, played in the film by Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.
In the 1994 film, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a man who is seemingly an ordinary husband but is secretly an international spy behind the facade of an office worker. Over the course of the film, his life of intrigue and danger takes a toll on his family life when his wife, looking for a thrill, becomes involved in his latest case. The synopsis suggests that the series will pick up pretty much where the film left off. Sounds like:
“An ordinary suburban housewife (Ginger Gonzaga) is shocked to discover that her plain and nondescript computer consultant husband (Steve Howey) is a trained international spy. She is plunged into a dangerous and adventurous life when she is recruited to work alongside him to save the world while trying to revive their passionless marriage.”

Alongside the updated synopsis, more detailed descriptions of the two main characters have also been revealed. First up is Ginger Gonzaga’s Helen, “Harry’s supportive wife, mother of two teenage children, and a linguistics professor who is increasingly annoyed by Harry’s constantly absent business trips. She is increasingly angry and feels as if she has been robbed of the life she once imagined for herself. Thrilled when Harry invites her on a trip to Paris, Helen is in for a rude shock when she discovers a very different side to her husband: that he is actually a world-class spy.”
In addition, character information about Harry describes him as “a benevolent, security-playing, seemingly risk-averse computer salesman and devoted family man raising two children. In reality, however, Harry is an undercover agent, a first class spy working for a secret US intelligence organisation”.
True Lies is a film that was always planned to have a sequel, and at one time it looked like it might. However, as the years went by, so did the actors, and it seemed that True Lies was destined to become a standalone film that could never really become a franchise. While the new series is more of a reboot than a direct sequel, there are enough connections to the original film that fans new and old will likely find something to like.
