MOVIE NEWS – Taron Egerton has some promising news about Kingsman 3, the conclusion of the film trio based around Eggsy and Merlin.
Taron Egerton says that the filming on Kingsman 3 could start soon. Egerton was the main star in the first two films of the comic action/spy franchise, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin. Not to be confused with the recently released prequel film, The King’s Man, in which Eggsy did not appear. The King’s Man followed the formation of the Kingsmen agency, led by Prince Orlando of Oxford, played by Ralph Fiennes, amid the turmoil of the First World War, decades before the events of the other films, which are set in the present.
The forthcoming sequel will be called Kingsman: Blue Blood, and Matthew Vaughn will continue to direct and co-write the series, as he has done for all the previous films. Blue Blood was scheduled to be shot at the same time as the prequel, but like many other productions in recent years, this plan was disrupted by the COVID epidemic. Little is known about the storyline, although we will continue to follow the tempestuous relationship between the aristocratic Eggsy and his regular mentor Harry Hart, aka Merlin (Colin Firth). While neither The Golden Circle nor The King’s Man was particularly successful with the critics, this has not hindered the franchise’s ability to make money and may not even thwart Vaughn’s plans to make at least seven more films or TV series in the Kingsman universe.
Egerton recently spoke about the series in an interview with Julia Cunningham of Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagle Podcast. In the interview, both hosts profess to be big fans of the franchise and Egerton is asked if there is anything new to share about his next appearance and the status of Kingsman 3. Egerton is respectful, saying, “I’m a humble puppet in the equation”, but confirms that “there is a script”. His full quote on the project can be read below:
“I understand we’ll be shooting the third part of the saga next year. But don’t listen to what I’m saying because I don’t know. You know, these are grown-up decisions.”
Although he has starred in some big films, he has not yet moved into the producer role, although he will be executive producing Apple’s upcoming Black Bird series, in which he will star alongside Ray Liotta in one of his final roles. While he is probably keeping quiet about the project for contractual reasons, it’s also very likely that he doesn’t know any more information beyond that. Actors are often not informed of such decisions until the films are in the final stages of preparation, which is why many of them become producers. As Egerton puts it, this allows them to be more involved and have a greater say in “adult decisions”.
For fans of the Kingsman films, while there isn’t much new information about Blue Blood, the update gives hope. Vaughn is now deeply engrossed in the franchise and seems keen to provide a proper send-off to the Eggsy/Harry relationship. Just because the trilogy is ending doesn’t necessarily mean that Eggsy’s character won’t return in future films. Either way, it’s going to happen. Although Egerton hasn’t appeared in a movie since his portrayal of Elton John in 2019’s Rocketman, from the potential role of the next Wolverine in the MCU to the release of Kingsman 3, the next few years could be significant for the actor’s growing popularity.
