Ex-Mass Effect Writer: Garrus Turned A Lot Of People On!

Former Mass Effect lead writer Drew Karpyshyn also talked about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on Reddit in an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

Karpyshyn was the lead writer on the first two Mass Effect games and admitted that no one at BioWare thought that the character of Garrus Vakarian would be so, erm… well-liked by players. In Mass Effect 2, he and Tali could be romantic partners depending on whether you create a male or female Shephard.

He wrote, “We always knew they’d come back as companions. I was a bit surprised fans wanted the romance options. Tali, I could sort of see… you never saw her face, so it was easy to imagine something vaguely human. (But she had those weird feet!) Garrus blindsided me—but once we saw what fans wanted, we decided to deliver!” When Tali left a picture of herself with Shephard in Mass Effect 3, there was a scandal after a stock photo was put there; it was rectified in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition re-release! He doesn’t know what the studio’s official position is these days, as he left for the second time in 2018.

According to him, the possibility of interspecies procreation is impossible: “The various species in Mass Effect are too biologically different to breed with each other, except Asari, of course… it’s part of what made them unique. But that’s my take; I don’t work on the series anymore, so if BioWare wants to have Turi-quar babies, that’s their choice.” (Tali is a quarian and Garrus is a turian.)

It also expresses how much of a surprise it was to the studio and how much of an impact Mass Effect had on gamers. In turn, it puts a significant weight on BioWare, which has changed significantly since then. A new instalment is in the pipeline, and the fans will have similar expectations.
