The pricing, release date and distributor for the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 mini-console are now official.
SEGA has announced on Twitter that the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will be available exclusively through Amazon starting October 27, the same day the 16-bit mini console launches as in Japan. The price is $103.8. The US price is much higher than the Japanese price! The “domestic” price tag is 9980 yen, which corresponds to approximately 72 dollars. So it seems like a 30% price increase. Still, suppose you look at the 100 JPY – 1 USD conversion. In that case, the pricing appears logical primarily, and SEGA can cover the fluctuating currency movements, so they won’t lose money when switching from dollars to yen.
More than 50 classic games will be included in the mini console; in addition to Genesis/Mega Drive games, SEGA CD titles will be included, as well as titles not yet seen on the SEGA Genesis Mini, the complete list of which is not yet known, so we’ll list them. SEGA/Mega CD: Mansion of Hidden Souls, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, Sonic CD. SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive: After Burner III, Alien Soldier, Bonanza Brothers: Wanted Dead or Alive, Night Striker, The Ninja Warriors, Lightening Force, Out Run, Out Runners, The Ooze, Rainbow Islands Extra, Rolling Thunder 2, Shining in the Darkness, Sonic 3D Blast, Splatterhouse 2, Super Hang On, Vectorman 2, Virtua Racing. Two bonus games have also been named: Fantasy Zone and Star Mobile.
So there’s already a North American release (though accessories sales will almost certainly be limited to the six-button controller). Which makes us suitable to ask: will the mini console be announced for Europe? If so, should we expect a price of 100 euros? SEGA should announce it shortly.
