Hideo Kojima Confesses: He Would Have Dropped The “Metal Gear” Title Long Time Ago!

Former Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that he originally wanted Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake to have a slightly different name.

Hideo Kojima recently stated that if it had been up to him, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake would have had a slightly different title, in which case we might not even be talking about the “Metal Gear franchise” today…

According to some posts on his Twitter profile, the famous Japanese director said that this particular Metal Gear game would have had a slightly different title. According to Hideo Kojima, he was reluctant to put “Metal Gear2” in the title, preferring something more “Indiana Jones style instead”. In other words, he would have chosen to drop the first part of the name and probably go with ‘Solid Snake’. That didn’t happen, of course, but Kojima agreed on a compromise with the sales team, so both titles were used.

The video game legend has been in the news a lot lately.

As well as seemingly moving forward with new projects, Hideo Kojima was mistaken for Shinzo Abe’s assassin earlier this month. Some on social media have compared the developer to Tetsuya Yamagami, the man arrested in connection with the shooting of Prime Minister Abe. Many of the accusations included racist remarks, with Kojima’s pictures being shared alongside those of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. Since the news broke, Kojima Productions has been considering legal action against the false rumours.

This unpleasantness aside, there was some good news about Hideo Kojima’s classic stealth series. To mark the 35th anniversary of the first game’s release, Konami is relaunching sales of Metal Gear Solid titles. Presumably, it will be the second and third instalments, Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater, that will be brought back.

There are, of course, those who want a remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2.

Given that they formed the basis of the later games and were at the forefront of spy games in general, they still hold a special place in the hearts of older gamers. Whether such remakes will ever be made is anyone’s guess, but rumour has it that Metal Gear Solid will be remade.
