Moreover, we’ve also noticed that Sony has dropped the disclosure of PlayStation 4 shipment figures (true, it was only in the hundreds of thousands last time…).
Sony has announced its results for the previous quarter (April-June). As of June 31, Sony has shipped 21.7 million units of PlayStation 5, with 2.4 million of it shipped in the previous quarter. Compared to the same period a year earlier (April to June 2021), it is an increase, but the 100k increase is not significant. What about the PlayStation 4? Sony has not provided a shipment figure. So the last time it reported shipment figures for the 2013 console was three months ago, when it shipped 100K PS4s, a drop of 900K compared to the January-March period in 2021. In other words: less than 100 thousand units, which is no longer relevant for the company…
Let’s also look at the supplementary data, and here, we discovered that Sony has indeed dropped the disclosure of PlayStation 4 hardware numbers. The PlayStation Plus switched to the new model in the previous quarter. Perhaps that’s why the 47.3 million subscribers figure, although higher than a year earlier (46.3 million), was higher (47.4 million) three months ago! Sony needs to get its act together, and that’s also because of game sales…
In the previous quarter (the first quarter of the 2022 fiscal year), 47.1 million PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games were purchased. It is a substantial drop from 63.6 million a year earlier (-16.5 million!). Of these, 6.4 million were internally developed, first-party titles (again, down 4.1 million from 10.5 million in 2021). The proportion of digital PlayStation Store games has increased, from 71% last year to 79% this year.
Sony’s Games & Network segment (which includes the PlayStation brand) should deliver more robust numbers.
