MOVIE NEWS – Will Naru return in another Predator movie, a possible Prey 2? Amber Midthunder shared her thoughts on the situation.
Maybe this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Naruto. Starring in Prey, the prequel to Predator was a huge hit when it aired on Hulu and Disney Plus and quickly became one of the strongest instalments in the franchise. It is currently the highest-rated film in the Predator series on Rotten Tomatoes, and many longtime Predator fans hold Prey in the same high regard as the popular original.
Due to the success of Preda, a direct sequel is not out of the question. There are currently no plans for another Predator movie, but if Pred 2 goes into planning, can we expect lead character Amber Midthunder to rejoin the film? In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Midthunder talks about the possibility. First, he addressed how many fans have reached out to him about a sequel, admitting that receiving such requests is very touching and exciting.
“I’ve heard that from a lot of fans. I think it’s very flattering. I didn’t think much about what would happen to the movie when it came out. I was so focused on making the movie that I think that was the goal for me. I didn’t have high expectations , one way or the other, about the release of the film. So for people to respond to this level of positivity, that’s been really touching for me. I’m really excited.”
Midthunder suggests that he is open to the idea of a sequel but notes how long it took director Dan Trachtenberg to make Prey, hinting that the sequel could take some time to come to fruition. He also says that Prey 2 depends on the potential sequel getting a solid enough plot idea that the film can stand on its own.
“I don’t know what the plans are for the future, but I’m confident that whatever decision is made. Dan (Trachtenberg, director of Prey) has been developing this for so long with 20th Century. It’s clear that that time has been spent making a create something really great. I’m sure nobody would do something again if it wasn’t amazing. So I think whatever happens, I think it’s going to be the right decision.”
It’s no surprise that so many fans are clamoring for a sequel, given how well received Prey was. This conversation also reached director Dan Trachtenberg in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Trachtenberg explained that he was focused on the story while making Prey, but he still wanted to include a sequel lead at the end, just to keep the door open for possibly exploring more of Naru’s story.
“The nerd in me looked ahead as much as I could before we started writing this movie, but the grown-up in me said, ‘Don’t drink to the bear’s skin ahead of time, and just be careful!’ Try to make the best possible movie right away. There’s something refreshing about seeing a movie that wasn’t really intended to be just the first part of something else. It feels good to be involved in a completely new film.”
In any case, we’ll probably see a lot more of Midthunder in the future, as Prey clearly made him an instant fan favorite in Hollywood. In addition to Prey, we can also currently see him in the other Disney Plus series, Reservation Dogs.
Prey can be viewed on our Disney Plus page.
