MOVIE NEWS – Veteran actors Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman are set to produce The Gray House for Paramount.
The limited series The Gray House is moving forward at Paramount Global, with acclaimed Hollywood stars Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman in the lead. According to Deadline, The Gray House, a six-hour Civil War spy drama series to be produced by Costner’s Territory Pictures alongside Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment and Leslie Greif’s Big Dreams Entertainment, has been greenlit. Costner will also serve as executive producer, while Rod Lake and Howard Kaplan will produce for Territory Pictures and Alex Kerr will produce for Big Dreams Entertainment.
The Gray House follows three women who, according to General Ulysses S. Grant, helped the North win the Civil War. The series is written by Greif, Darrell Fetty (The Offer) and John Sayles (Lonestar). Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields) is attached to direct, with shooting scheduled to begin this spring. From Deadline’s report, the story description reads:
The Gray House focuses on the stories of the previously untold women who turned the American Civil War to the North’s advantage. A Richmond sharecropper and her daughter, a formerly enslaved African-American and a courtesan, create the first successful female spy network operating right under the nose of the Confederate high command. They risk their lives and freedom to help win the war and preserve American democracy.
The Gray House is based on a true story.
“The Gray House is an untold true story about three courageous abolitionist heroes of the Civil War who happened to be women,” said Costner, who previously scored a significant hit as the star of Dances with Wolves, a Civil War story. “Because I am passionate about history, it is always a personal experience for me to share rich, layered stories about America’s unsung heroes. I’m delighted to join forces with my friends Leslie Greif and Morgan Freeman, with whom I’ve had great success in the past, to produce this important, epic saga.”
“I’m thrilled to be working with our friends and industry legends Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman,” added Dan Cohen, Head of Content Licensing, Paramount Global. “Their taste in material is unmatched. Couple that with the opportunity to work once again with Leslie Greif, who developed and executive produced the Paramount+ hit series The Offer, and it’s a project we’re looking forward to bringing to audiences worldwide.”
Freeman and McCreary further commented, “Morgan and I are thrilled to bring to life the story of Mary Bowser, who volunteered to be a slave and was placed in the “Confederate White House” (also known as The Grey House). Everyone thought her illiterate, so she spoke freely in front of them. Thanks to her photographic memory, she was able to send battle reports and secret information to the Union army and helped turn the tide of the Civil War. Revelations is about uncovering the truth, and that truth must be uncovered!”
