Marvel Signs Harrison Ford to Replace the Late William Hurt in the MCU

MOVIE NEWS – After the age of 80, we can see Harrison Ford in another iconic role, who recently said goodbye to Indiana Jones.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had no shortage of stars since Robert Downey Jr. helped launch the franchise with Iron Man in 2008, and has since opened the door for virtually every movie star under the sun to get in on the action. Almost 15 years later, Kevin Feige has pulled off perhaps the biggest coup since becoming the head of Marvel.

Since this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we’ve known that the “Thunderbolts” movie is officially wrapping up its fifth phase, confirming earlier reports that the comic book team-up extravaganza is in active development at the studio. Based on the team’s traditional comic book portrayals, fans could easily expect a roster of characters including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell’s US Agent, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and many more. Many have also speculated that Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross will also have a significant role in the film. Unfortunately, the untimely death of actor William Hurt put an end to these plans, but Marvel didn’t miss a beat.

We can independently confirm that the news reported live on The Hot Mic With John Rocha and Jeff Sneider is indeed true. The role of Thaddeus Ross – yes, you read that right – will be played again by Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford took the role of Thaddeus Ross

There are big franchise castings and there are big franchise castings. Harrison Ford joining the MCU is certainly the latter and adds a nice feather to Kevin Feige’s cap, as the star of “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones” and “Blade Runner” can now add superheroes to his storied resume. Obviously, a man of Ford’s age isn’t expected to do much real action (though, of course, he’s finished filming the next “Indiana Jones” sequel), but in the source material, Thaddeus Ross played a similar role in the anti-hero team Thunderbolts to DC’s Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad .

While we might assume that Ford will also have an important role in “Thunderbolts,” according to Sneider, the character will debut in the upcoming “Captain America: The New World Order.”

Of course, the thought of Ford donning the kind of motion capture equipment that Mark Ruffalo and now Tatiana Maslany have used to bring their Hulk characters to life is mind boggling. After all, Ross will be “Red Hulk” in the pages of Marvel Comics. However Ford’s specific role plays out, and however painfully William Hurt’s presence will be missed, we look forward to seeing how things turn out.

“Thunderbolts” will be directed by Jake Schreier (“Robot & Frank,” “Paper Towns”) and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
