TECH NEWS – The head of Meta says Apple’s messaging service is nowhere near as secure as his company’s product…
It’s no exaggeration to say that Meta and Apple have competed with each other lately, so it’s no surprise that the head of Meta, which owns Facebook, Oculus, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp (the subject of this story), has hit out at Apple’s iMessage on Instagram. WhatsApp was bought a few years ago by Facebook (which since then changed its name to Meta; Google’s parent company has also renamed itself to avoid confusion and is now called Alphabet), and Zuckerberg says it is much more secure than “the apples'” messaging.
Zuckerberg praised WhatsApp on Instagram, saying, “WhatsApp is far more private and secure than iMessage, with end-to-end encryption that works across both iPhones and Android, including group chats. With WhatsApp, you can also set all new chats to disappear with a button. And last year, we introduced end-to-end encrypted backups too. All of which iMessage still doesn’t have.”
The image below (from the post) is also a stab at iMessage. Green and blue bubble text have been added to the image (which we’ve uploaded to Imgur because we wouldn’t comment on linking from Zuck’s sites), and the Private Bubble text has also popped up there. Google has also criticized Apple for not migrating its messaging service to the RCS standard, which covers end-to-end encryption.
However, Meta is also critical of Apple: Zuckerberg says that limiting the number of ads iPhone users see will negatively affect small businesses and ventures. It has been introduced by the tech company so that tracking can be turned off when visiting URLs and within apps. WhatsApp has more than five billion downloads on Google Play, which iOS users would probably only use if they had to send a message to Android…
It wouldn’t be a big surprise if Apple were to strike back in return.
