Activision Blizzard is making fools of players who want this year’s Call of Duty on disc instead of digital download…
A picture of the contents of the PlayStation 5 retail disc of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was shared on Discord and can be seen on Twitter. It shows that the game’s disc contains only 72.23 MB of data. A Blu-ray disc can hold at least 25 gigabytes of data, usually up to 50 gigabytes, with PlayStation 5 BDXL discs holding up to 100 GB. The difference is enormous, and, as a result, you can’t play offline: you have to download the game from PlayStation Network because the disc is essentially blank.
Even nowadays, the trend is that a lot of the games are still on the retail disc, and that’s where the day-1 update comes in because there are always bug fixes between the time the retail version is manufactured and the day it’s released. In comparison, Activision Blizzard thought to hell with it because even the single-player story mode is not on the Blu-ray disc. People with slow internet connections (and/or data caps) have a right to complain because either the internet bill will be expensive to download or it will take a day or two to download the game…
Meanwhile, ElAnalistaDeBits has made a comparison. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II runs upscaled (temporal upscaling) at 60 FPS in 4K on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and both consoles are showing nearly identical performance. The 120 FPS mode, however, shows some discrepancies: the PlayStation 5 can drop down to around 90 FPS, while the Xbox Series X doesn’t go below 115! There’s little difference in picture quality, too. Both consoles are close to the ultra settings.
The Xbox Series S has 60 FPS at 1440p and is mostly stable, while the 1080p performance mode ranges from 60-90 FPS. However, without DLSS, you can achieve 4K/60 FPS on a PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. The image quality has been reined back for lighting and other effects compared to the more powerful current-gen consoles, but it still looks pleasing on the XSX.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is available today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
