MOVIE NEWS – Matthew Perry has tried to persuade Zac Front, who co-starred with him in 17 Again, to play his younger self again in a new film. But Efron turned down the offer.
There will be no 17 Again reunion soon. Recently, Matthew Perry participated in an interview with Jessica Shaw on SiriusXM’s Pop Culture Spotlight to promote his new memoir. The book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing has garnered some attention because of the actor’s honest thoughts. Among other things, he discusses his long struggle with addiction and his apparent dislike for Keanu Reeves. (He has since apologised for the latter.)
In the new interview, Perry also revealed that he hopes to reunite with his 17 Again star Zac Efron in a new film.
In the 2009 film, Efron played a younger version of Perry’s character. Perry says he tried getting Efront to sign up for an upcoming romantic comedy. In it, the Firestarter star would again play a younger Perry. This time, however, Efron was not interested. As Perry says in an interview about the film he plans to direct:
“I finished a screenplay that we’re out with to some people. I want to direct that… I have a small part in it. I wrote it for myself and then realised I’m 20 years too old to play this. So we’re trying to cast the leads now.”
Perry says Efron got the lead role in the film. Perry would have been a younger version, with the Friends star appearing in a cameo. But Efron turned the film down, so Perry went back to the drawing board to find a new actor for the role.
“He said no, so we’ve got to find someone who says yes.”
Zac Efron might just be too busy
It’s not entirely clear why Efron turned down Perry’s romantic comedy. But one reason could be that he didn’t have the time. After impressing with his performance as Ted Bundy in Netflix’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, Efron also starred in this year’s Gold, Firestarter and The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which recently premiered on Apple TV+. Efron is currently working on the professional wrestling film The Iron Claw, and photos from the set went viral after seeing the transformation his body underwent to play professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich.
Meanwhile, Perry hasn’t appeared on the big screen since 17 Again, although HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion last year.
In recent years, he has also had notable roles in the TV series The Odd Couple, The Good Fights and The Kennedys: After Camelot.
