At the moment, the big N has no plans to increase the price of the Nintendo Switch, but it could happen later.
Sony has already increased the price of the PlayStation 5 by €50 (for both the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition). However, the company hasn’t dared to do so in the US, where the Xbox Series is a more vital competitor. Microsoft hasn’t officially raised the price anywhere yet, but they’re considering it, and in India, we’ve already seen them charge more for the two Xbox Series consoles. It is fair to ask what Nintendo is planning.
According to Takashi Mochizuki, who works for Bloomberg, Nintendo was asked if they were planning a price increase. The Japanese company replied that there are no such plans at the moment but that they would look into the situation and decide whether to take that step. (They could choose not to raise the price: that would make the price even more competitive, and since Switch sales are consistently good, it wouldn’t hurt the company to keep the price tags unchanged!)
Mochizuki added that he thinks it is interesting that Nintendo is considering raising the price of the three Switch models (the base model, the Lite that cannot be docked, and the larger OLED model with a larger OLED display and a larger, Ethernet-connected dock) because the company’s mentality so far has been that they cannot make their existing products more expensive because they are considered toys that children buy. However, consoles are not just toys; price increases for toys (not video games!) are common these days.
The question is how much Nintendo can raise the price since the Switch has been available since March 2017. It’s not a fresh set of hardware components. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series also launched in November 2020 and have more modern technology, so they are not cheap. So Nintendo’s possible price increase seems unusual for that reason, too.
