MOVIE NEWS – Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige were not pleased after Alfred Molina accidentally revealed Doc Ock’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Alfred Molina has learned his lesson after accidentally revealing his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Rumours that Molina would reprise his role as Doc Ock surfaced back in late 2020. The actor himself seemed to confirm his involvement in an interview when he said things were “going great” to a sly journalist who asked him about No Way Home before his return was officially announced.
In a new interview with Radio Times, Molina reflects on what it was like to let the genie out of the bottle.
He reveals that he got a cold shoulder from Marvel Studios for the tease. Producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige were quite frustrated at the time. He will not make that mistake again, regardless of whether he ever gets the chance to return as Doc Ock in the MCU. Here’s what Molina had to say when asked about the possibility of a return.
“I can neither confirm nor deny. That’s the official line. I got into a bit of trouble over the last iteration because I happened to let the cat out of the bag quite innocently. Just accidentally, I was talking to a journalist who said, ‘So, you know, how’s the Spider-Man movie going?’ And I went, ‘Oh, great thanks’. Then literally the next day, Variety was like, ‘Alfred Molina reveals Doc Ock returns.”
Molina then went on to talk about the trouble he got into because of his blunder, which now causes him to refer to a new, tried and true line whenever he is asked similar questions in interviews like this.
“I got into such trouble. I was getting phone calls from Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige was on the red carpet somewhere and somebody asked him about some Marvel movie and apparently he got a bit snippy and turned around and said, ‘Ask Alfred Molina’. So I got into a little bit of hot water. So that’s the official line – I can neither confirm nor deny.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in cinemas in December 2021 with tremendous success. Even without official confirmation that Maguire and Garfield would be in it, the anticipation of the final live-action Spider-Man team-up certainly contributed to the film’s skyrocketing ticket sales. The film also opened the door wide to the multiverse. There is no reason why memorable cameos can’t happen in other movies. But it all started when Molina accidentally blabbed about Doc Ock’s return.
