A Warner Bros. Discovery co-CEO, James Gunn, has revealed that DC’s Expanded Universe will expand into video games in the future.
Director James Gunn has revealed that DC’s Expanded Universe is planning to enter the world of video games in the future. The well-known director has starred in both DC and Marvel superhero movies recently. He has worked on franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers. Last month, Gunn was named co-president of DC’s film division with producer Peter Safran. The two previously worked together on 2021’s Suicide Squad. Now Gunn has hinted that the DCU could be making video games.
While DC’s Expanded Universe has yet to enter the gaming world fully, many of the comic giant’s properties are no stranger to video game adaptations.
The Batman franchise has been part of gaming culture since the early consoles. Some series, such as the Batman: Arkham games, have been critically acclaimed. The Wonder Woman game is currently in development, but no release date has been confirmed.
A seemingly innocuous tweet from James Gunn revealed that DC might be planning a video game expansion of its cinematic universe. The revelation came as a simple “Yes” in response to a fan. The person asked about the possible inclusion of video games in the DC Universe, in addition to movies and TV series. DC has not yet confirmed that official games within the cinematic universe are in the works. However, they are currently working on more movies, with Shazam, The Flash and Aquaman all getting new films next year.
While DC has no confirmed plans to adapt the cinematic universe into video games, DC Comics has made its mark on games in recent years.
Warner Bros. crossover project MultiVersus has brought several popular DC superheroes into the game. These include the recently released Black Adam alongside the DC movie of the same name. DC heroes have also been popular themes in family-oriented games such as Lego’s DC Super-Villains and Outright Games’ upcoming DC Justice League.
The DC cinematic universe would follow in the footsteps of significant competitor Marvel with video games. Marvel’s own cinematic universe properties have often been featured in games based on its major motion pictures, such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers. Marvel has also enjoyed success with several other games not closely related to the cinematic universe. One example is Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series.
