MOVIE NEWS – Maria Full of Grace star Catalina Sandino Moreno is set to star alongside leading lady Ana de Armas in the film Ballerina.

The cast of Ballerina continues to expand. Ballerina, currently in production in Prague, is a spinoff of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick film series. The spinoff is set in the same world and stars Ana de Armas as another deadly assassin who uses her powers to take revenge on those who killed her family. According to Lionsgate, it has just been announced that Oscar nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno has just signed on to play de Armas’ opposite in the film, although no details about her role have been revealed.

“One of the challenges of casting Ballerina was to cast actors who have the strength, emotional presence and physical ability that Ana has,” said producer Erica Lee in a statement about the casting. “Having worked with Catalina in John Woo’s Silent Night, it was clear that she was at the top of our list and we are thrilled to be working with her again.”

As Lee noted, Moreno will star in Silent Night, the first American action film from John Woo in more than a decade. Moreno is joined in the film by Joel Kinnaman and Kid Cudi. Moreno also recently starred in the indie film Barbarians alongside Iwan Rheon and Tom Cullen and in the first season of Epix’s hit series From. Other recent work includes a series regular on Showtime’s The Affair and a starring role in the Duplass Brothers’ HBO series Room 104. This follows Moreno’s previous Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in 2004’s Maria Full of Grace.
