Elden Ring And God of War: Ragnarok Are NOT 2022’s Bestsellers In Japan!

Yes: neither FromSoftware nor Sony Santa Monica Studio’s game made it to the top of the podium in one of the most crucial video game markets!

Teiten Game has summarised the weekly sales figures published by Japanese Famitsu magazine to give an annual summary of retail game sales by platform. The result was surprising: among PlayStation 5 sales, it wasn’t Elden Ring that won the year (although FromSoftware’s game was outstanding), nor did the new God of War top the list. And no, it’s not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II that got to the top of the roster. The winner is somewhat of a surprise. Let’s take a look at the top 10 PlayStation 5 sales:

  1.     Gran Turismo 7 – 198,369
  2.     Elden Ring – 127,664
  3.     Horizon Forbidden West – 116,777
  4.     Resident Evil: Village – 74,644
  5.     Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 66,238
  6.     Tales of Arise – 65,292
  7.     Demon’s Souls – 58,661
  8.     God of War: Ragnarök – 45,159
  9.     Lost Judgment – 42,743
  10.     Dragon Quest X Offline – 34,616

The winner comes from home soil, as Gran Turismo 7 was created by Polyphony Digital, a Japanese studio (and the developers of Elden Ring are also Japanese). Horizon Forbidden West beat Resident Evil: Village and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Their performance is fair because neither of them has a 2022 release date. Despite its 2020 release, Demon’s Souls still made the top 10, but the performance of Kratos and Atreus might be a little disappointing for Sony (as Aloy moved up to third place).

Battlefield 2042 overtook Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (!?), Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War made it into the top 20, while Monster Hunter: World was the most popular on PlayStation 4. Elden Ring also made it into the top 10 (as a cross-gen game) but only managed to make it to 20th place (!), and even more surprisingly, neither Gran Turismo 7 nor God of War: Ragnarok made the PS4 list.

It shows that the Japanese are overwhelmingly opting for the newer console for cross-gen releases.
