The Ukrainian studio behind the Sherlock Holmes games has given a devastatingly honest summary of the team’s mental state.
Frogwares wrote about the situation in a lengthy Twitter thread, including several pictures, which we’ve included below: “The last couple of months have been quite difficult on our team here in Ukraine. After a summer of relative “calm” and the ability to create some routine, the wave of missile and suicide drone strikes that started in October has taken quite a toll on us mentally. Each morning, you wake up hoping it will be another normal-ish day.
Instead, you need to be prepared to be greeted by explosions at any moment. You gather your family and pets and huddle in basements, shelters, or bathrooms when it happens. Surrounded by a sea of air raid sirens, anti-aircraft fire, and missile blasts, all you can do is sit there, wondering if this is your time. Some raids last minutes. Others hours. It’s hard to tell sometimes because, in reality, it feels like they will never end. But they eventually do stop. Then you check the news, the team Discord channels, and your messaging apps to see where was hit and if anyone you might know could be one of the casualties that day. Outside your window are smoke plumes, ambulance lights, and car alarms blaring, and all you can do is try to get back to your day.
Then come the rolling electricity cuts for hours on end. The hits to the internet connectivity. The interruptions to water and heating. With all that in the background, you now need to start getting back into your work day. See who can be online now and who will have to be later. The worst part is you don’t know when the next wave will come, but you begin to see the pattern with the major ones. Each time Ukraine has a decisive win on the battlefield (which we WILL all absolutely celebrate), we need also be ready that the next day, the Russians, with their fragile little egos, will lash out at civilian targets. Useless cowards who have run out of ideas on how else to win a war they started, so they resort to trying to demoralize, freeze and starve ordinary people.
This isn’t us giving up, though. If anything, it reminds us why we need to keep resisting, keep fighting and never consider negotiating because we know what we are fighting for. You can’t put a rocket through my grans living room, shell my nephew’s school, bomb the hospital where my mom worked, and then expect me to talk to you. So we’ll keep gritting our teeth. Keep working around the chaos. Keep supporting our troops. And sure, as hell, keep celebrating each victory. Thank you to everyone who has been with us in some way during this horrid time. We hope you all have a good holiday break, and we’ll see you all soon in 2023,” the studio wrote.
The war should end already, and without Ukraine losing any territory.
