MOVIE NEWS – Tim Miller is taking over from Eli Roth at the helm of Borderlands movie in what is being described as a “friendly handover”.
The Borderlands movie was tentatively scheduled to hit theatres in 2022. However, that never happened. With filming officially wrapped in 2021, fans are rightly puzzled.
Our first update in a long time comes courtesy of Deadline, which reports that director Eli Roth has handed things over to Deadpool director Tim Miller for a several-week reshoot.
Roth has left to start directing the slasher horror film Thanksgiving, which was first previewed back in 2007 as a mock trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse. More than 15 years later, Roth can finally turn the joke into an actual film. The movie is about a serial killer who serves people instead of turkeys during the holidays.
According to sources speaking to Deadline, the handover of directorial duties from Roth to Miller is a “friendly baton handover”. While that’s good news, reshoots are not usually something that film production companies like to do. Because it increases the cost of the film, both in fees and by delaying its release. It also often indicates that there is a severe problem with the production. However, many films have been postponed by reshoots but have ended up as blockbusters.
What we know so far is not exactly a faithful retelling of the Borderlands story.
The film will focus on Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett) as a notorious outlaw who is reluctant to return to her home planet Pandora to find the missing daughter of the head of Atlas Corporation.
Along the way, she forms a crack team of hunters, including ex-military Roland (Kevin Hart), destructive prodigy Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), her psychopathic protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu) and mildly mad scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis). There’s also Claptrap, the robot played by Jack Black.
Apart from the names and make-up, it has very little to do with the Borderlands mythos, so most people are not very enthusiastic about the game adaptation. The fact that we heard nothing from test screenings last year is not the best omen. Hopefully, the Borderlands movie will be closer to the games, thanks to these reshoots.
