As Sony will eventually close up shop for good on the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 3 with their respective PlayStation Stores, be prepared for digital-only games to disappear… or act on it.
In 2021, Sony announced that it would be closing its PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable (PSP), and PlayStation Vita. Such was the backlash the company received that, in the end, only the PS Store on the PSP was gone, so you can still access their dedicated digital store by browsing on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The question is, of course, for how long, because Sony is trying to erase the past for good (the PlayStation past has essentially disappeared from its website), and we can trust Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, as much as we can trust a goat to look after the cabbage.
The PlayStation Vita has a new jailbreak solution, which means you can hack your handheld and run any game without using the PlayStation Store. You don’t even need a PC to do it, and because it’s so much easier to unlock your handheld (which will be the only way to play on it later if something isn’t a physical, card-based release), it takes less than ten minutes to ensure that you don’t lose your games in the future. In addition to the handheld, you’ll need a cheap SD2Vita adapter, as a microSD card is part of the process.
Sony may have forgotten about the PlayStation Vita (which has been around for over eleven years), but its fanbase kept the handheld alive and well. If you don’t have the basic 1000 model PlayStation Vita (you’ll need an official Sony memory card for that), you can use this video from Retro Game Corps to open the gates to running future backups with the help of the Vita’s browser’s exploit. (You can also dodge the memory card solution, as you can partition the Vita to create internal memory.)
If you’re looking for a text-based explanation instead of a video, you can find it here. Hopefully, Sony won’t patch this with new firmware (the PS3 is still sometimes updated…).
