Sony has released its results for the previous fiscal quarter, giving us an update on where the PlayStation 5 stands regarding sales.
The company said 32.1 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped to stores by December 31. 7.1 million units were shipped in the previous quarter (October to December), a substantial increase from the 4 million units Sony’s console managed to reach at the end of 2021. It’s no coincidence that their Live from PS5 campaign is running worldwide (and Sony has a giant PlayStation 5 on display in several locations) because at the end of the year, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said that the console’s period of stock shortages was over.
Here’s the rest of the data: 86.5 million games sold this quarter for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, which is no longer included in its hardware stats, down 6.2 million from 92.7 million a year earlier. 20.8 million were internally developed, first-party titles, but that’s 9.5 million, up from the 11.3 million at the end of 2021. The proportion of games purchased on the PlayStation Store (i.e., sold digitally) remained at 62%.
At the end of 2022, PlayStation Plus had 46.4 million subscribers, down 1.6 million from 48 million at the end of 2021; PS Plus moved to a three-tier model during the year. Sony could still profit despite fewer subscribers, as PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium are more expensive (and it is questionable whether it is worth it). There were 112 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, up by around 1 million from a year earlier.
Finally, a game sales figure: Sony Santa Monica Studio announced that God of War: Ragnarök, released on November 9 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, has sold 11 million copies so far. It sold 5.1 million in its first five days and 5.9 million in the 11 weeks since then.
